Western Montana Mental Health Center (“WMMHC”) Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (July 21, 2025) – Federman & Sherwood, a national law firm specializing in privacy and data breach litigation, is investigating a data breach involving Western Montana Mental Health Center (WMMHC) that was reported to the Office of the Attorney General of Maine on July 17, 2025.

According to the notification submitted by WMMHC’s legal counsel, the organization discovered a network disruption on September 15, 2024, and promptly launched an investigation with the assistance of independent cybersecurity experts. The investigation concluded that certain files were accessed without authorization. By May 27, 2025, it was determined that personal and protected health information—including names and Social Security numbers—may have been exposed.

Although WMMHC reports it has not found evidence of misuse or attempted misuse of the impacted data, approximately six (6) Maine residents were directly affected. Notification letters were sent to those individuals on July 17, 2025, and WMMHC is offering 12 months of complimentary identity protection services through IDX, including credit monitoring, dark web surveillance, a $1 million identity theft insurance policy, and full-service identity restoration.

Federman & Sherwood is investigating whether WMMHC took reasonable steps to safeguard patient information and whether notification of affected individuals was provided in a timely and adequate manner under state and federal law.

The exposed information potentially included:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • Medical and health insurance information
  • Other sensitive information
