Open Practice Solutions (“OPS”) Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (October 20, 2025) – The law firm of Federman & Sherwood announces an investigation into a data incident involving Open Practice Solutions (“OPS”), a healthcare technology company that provides practice management and billing solutions to medical providers. According to the data breach notification filed with the Attorney General of Maine, OPS experienced an error that may have exposed certain patient billing information.
On June 26, 2025, OPS was alerted to a potential issue within its billing portal. Following an internal investigation, OPS determined that a software misconfiguration in a system update earlier that day temporarily allowed another OPS customer to view limited billing details belonging to other patients. The misconfiguration remained active for approximately five hours before being corrected.
While OPS stated it has no evidence that any personal information was viewed or misused, it issued notifications to potentially affected individuals out of an abundance of caution. The exposed information may have included patient names, provider names, dates of service, and services provided. Sensitive data such as addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, financial account details, and health insurance information were not involved in the incident.
OPS reports that it has implemented corrective measures to strengthen its systems and ensure such misconfigurations do not recur.
Federman & Sherwood’s investigation seeks to determine whether OPS implemented adequate security and quality control procedures to safeguard patient data and prevent unauthorized exposure of protected health information.
The compromised information may have included:
- Full name
- Provider name
- Date(s) of service
- Other sensitive information
