National University of Natural Medicine (“NUNM”) Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (December 1, 2025) – Federman & Sherwood, a national law firm dedicated to data breach and consumer protection matters, is investigating a cybersecurity incident involving the National University of Natural Medicine (“NUNM”), following the institution’s recent filing with the Attorney General of Maine.
According to the filing, NUNM discovered on November 7, 2025, that an unauthorized individual gained access to a single employee email account. The investigation revealed that the mailbox may have been accessed or acquired by the unauthorized actor between July 22, 2025, and July 29, 2025. After reviewing the affected emails, NUNM determined that personal information belonging to 15 Maine residents was contained within the compromised account.
The exposed information includes individuals’ names in combination with additional personal identifiers, which may have included sensitive data depending on the email contents. NUNM noted that it has not identified any evidence of fraud or identity theft as a result of the incident but is notifying affected individuals out of an abundance of caution.
NUNM issued written notifications to impacted Maine residents on November 26, 2025, and is offering 12 months of complimentary Kroll identity monitoring and credit monitoring services. These services include credit monitoring, fraud consultation, and identity theft restoration assistance.
In response to the incident, NUNM secured the compromised email account, engaged external cybersecurity experts to assist with the investigation, and reports that it is taking significant steps to strengthen its data security posture and protect the personal information it maintains.
Federman & Sherwood is investigating whether NUNM implemented adequate cybersecurity protections, whether the breach could have been prevented, and what legal options may be available to affected individuals.
