McLaren Health Care and Karmanos Cancer Institute Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (June 23, 2025) – The law firm of Federman & Sherwood announces that it is investigating a data breach involving McLaren Health Care and its affiliate, Karmanos Cancer Institute. The breach, stemming from unauthorized access to McLaren’s computer network, potentially compromised the personal and protected health information of patients and employees across multiple states.
According to public reports, McLaren became aware of suspicious activity on its systems on August 5, 2024, and immediately initiated its emergency response protocols. An independent forensic investigation later confirmed that unauthorized access had occurred between July 17 and August 3, 2024. The review concluded on May 5, 2025, and determined that files accessed during the breach contained names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, medical information, and health insurance details.
McLaren began issuing individual notifications on June 20, 2025, including at least 25 Maine residents, and is offering 12 months of free identity monitoring services through IDX. A dedicated call center and informational web pages were also established to assist affected individuals.
Federman & Sherwood is investigating the scope of the breach and potential legal claims on behalf of individuals whose personal and health information may have been exposed. The firm is evaluating whether McLaren took adequate steps to protect sensitive data and meet its obligations under state and federal privacy laws.
