Highland Health Systems Data Breach Class Action Settlement
August 28, 2026 – A proposed $650,000 class action settlement has been reached in the Circuit Court for Calhoun County, Alabama, resolving claims arising from a July 2023 data breach involving Highland Health Systems.
The lawsuit, styled Weyerman, et al. v. Highland Health Systems, et al., Case No. 2024-CV-900370, alleges that a targeted cyberattack resulted in unauthorized access to files containing personal and protected health information. The potentially affected information included names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, financial account and payment card information, medical and health insurance information, and driver’s license or state identification information. Highland Health denies any wrongdoing, and the Court has not determined which party is correct.
The settlement class generally consists of individuals residing in the United States whose private information was exposed to unauthorized third parties as a result of the data breach discovered by Highland Health on or about July 3, 2023.
Under the proposed settlement, Highland Health will establish a $650,000 Settlement Fund. Eligible class members may claim two years of medical identity protection with three-bureau monitoring and either reimbursement of up to $5,000 for documented losses related to the data breach or an alternative cash payment estimated at $85, subject to the terms of the settlement.
The deadline to object to or request exclusion from the settlement is September 28, 2026, and the deadline to submit a claim is October 28, 2026. The Court has scheduled a Final Approval Hearing for November 30, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. Central Time.
