Federman & Sherwood Investigates Jackson County, Missouri for Data Breach

Oklahoma City, OK (April 10, 2024) – The law firm of Federman & Sherwood has initiated an investigation into Jackson County, Missouri with respect to their recent data breach. On April 2, 2024, Jackson County, Missouri announced that it had closed some government offices after a ransomware attack. Jackson County Administrator Troy Shulte stated that an overnight corrections officer fell for a phishing email, which gave hackers a way in. County Executive Frank White, Jr. declared a state of emergency as a proactive measure to give the county more flexibility to respond to the incident. The executive order instructed county staff to “take whatever steps are necessary to protect resident data, county assets and continue essential services.” Systems impacted so far include tax payments, online property, marriage licenses, and inmate searches.
