Excelsior Orthopaedics, LLP Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (September 3, 2025) – The law firm of Federman & Sherwood announces an investigation into a recently reported data breach involving Excelsior Orthopaedics, LLP, a healthcare provider headquartered in Amherst, New York, with 10 locations across western New York.
According to a supplemental notice filed with the Maine Attorney General, Excelsior detected unusual activity on its network on June 23, 2024. A forensic investigation determined that unauthorized access to its systems occurred between June 18, 2024, and June 27, 2024, potentially compromising sensitive data of current and former patients and employees of Excelsior and its related entities, including Buffalo Surgery Center and Northtowns Orthopedics.
Excelsior’s review, completed on July 30, 2025, confirmed that the compromised data included sensitive information.
A total of 24 Maine residents were identified as affected by the breach. Notification letters were mailed in waves from June 2024 through August 26, 2025. Impacted individuals have been offered 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft restoration services through CyberScout, a TransUnion company.
In response to the incident, Excelsior reports that it has taken significant steps to enhance its cybersecurity, including working with outside cybersecurity experts, redesigning business processes, deploying new security tools, and partnering with a managed security provider. Excelsior also notified federal law enforcement and continues to cooperate with the investigation.
