Esse Health Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (July 3, 2025) – The law firm of Federman & Sherwood announces that it is investigating a data breach involving Esse Health, a healthcare provider that recently reported a significant cybersecurity incident affecting patient information. A notice of the breach was filed with the Attorney General of Maine, revealing that unauthorized access to sensitive patient data occurred within the organization’s network.
According to the notification, Esse Health identified suspicious activity on April 21, 2025, and promptly launched an investigation with assistance from external forensic and cybersecurity experts. The investigation confirmed that a cybercriminal accessed the network and was able to view and exfiltrate certain files containing personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI).
The compromised data varied by individual but may have included names, addresses, dates of birth, health insurance information, patient account numbers, medical record numbers, and certain medical details. Importantly, there is no indication that social security numbers or the organization’s electronic medical records system (NextGen) were impacted.
In response, Esse Health secured its systems, notified law enforcement, and is offering complimentary identity protection services through IDX. These services include credit monitoring, identity recovery assistance, and a $1 million identity fraud insurance policy. Impacted individuals must enroll by September 30, 2025.
Federman & Sherwood is actively investigating the incident and evaluating whether adequate cybersecurity measures were in place to protect sensitive healthcare data.
