Educational Employees Credit Union Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood

June 1, 2026 – Federman & Sherwood, a national consumer protection law firm, is investigating the Educational Employees Credit Union data breach, a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to sensitive personal information that was disclosed in a notice filed with the California Attorney General.

According to the notice, Educational Employees Credit Union (“EECU”) learned on December 15, 2025, that an unauthorized individual gained access to an employee email account for a limited period of time. Upon discovering the incident, EECU immediately secured its email environment and launched an investigation with the assistance of cybersecurity professionals.

The investigation determined that certain emails may have been accessed or removed by the unauthorized individual on December 15, 2025. Following a detailed review of the impacted email account, EECU determined on May 8, 2026, that certain emails contained sensitive personal information belonging to affected individuals.

Although the notice does not publicly specify the exact information involved for each affected individual, the incident potentially exposed sensitive personal information maintained within the compromised email account.

Email-related cybersecurity incidents are particularly concerning because they may provide unauthorized actors access to personal, financial, and account-related information that can be used for identity theft, fraud, and phishing attacks.

Federman & Sherwood is actively investigating whether Educational Employees Credit Union implemented adequate cybersecurity safeguards, including email security protections and employee account monitoring measures, and whether this data security incident could have been prevented. The firm is also evaluating potential legal claims on behalf of individuals affected by the Educational Employees Credit Union data breach.

EECU reported that it enhanced its security practices and is offering affected individuals two (2) years of complimentary identity monitoring, credit monitoring, fraud consultation, and identity theft restoration services through Kroll.

Consumers who received a notice regarding the Educational Employees Credit Union data breach or who believe their personal information may have been compromised are encouraged to closely monitor financial accounts, credit reports, and account activity for suspicious transactions.

The potentially compromised information may include:

  • Names
  • Social Security numbers
  • Other sensitive information
