Columbia University Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (August 8, 2025) – The law firm of Federman & Sherwood announces that it is investigating a data breach involving Columbia University.

According to a notice filed with the Maine Attorney General, Columbia University experienced a cybersecurity incident that began on or about May 16, 2025, when an unauthorized third party gained access to the university’s network and removed certain files. The incident was discovered following a technical outage on June 24, 2025, which disrupted parts of Columbia’s IT systems.

The compromised data may include names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and other personal information submitted during an application to Columbia or collected during enrollment. This could include contact details, demographic data, academic history, financial aid records, insurance details, and certain health information. Columbia has stated that it has no evidence that Columbia University Irving Medical Center patient records were affected.

In response, Columbia has enhanced its cybersecurity safeguards and is offering two years of complimentary credit monitoring and identity restoration services through Kroll to affected individuals. Written notifications were sent to impacted residents beginning August 6, 2025.

Federman & Sherwood is committed to protecting the rights of those whose personal information has been compromised in data breaches.

According to the filing, the breach exposed sensitive personal information, potentially including:
