Civil Service Employees Association, Inc. Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood

January 22, 2026– Federman & Sherwood is investigating a data breach involving Civil Service Employees Association, Inc. (“CSEA”), following a notification filed with the Maine Attorney General.

According to the filing, CSEA discovered suspicious activity on its computer systems on or about May 30, 2025. An investigation determined that an unauthorized party accessed CSEA’s systems between May 3, 2025, and May 31, 2025, during which time files containing personal information were obtained without authorization. CSEA reported that it found no evidence of misuse of the information at the time of notification.

The information potentially involved includes individuals’ names and Social Security numbers. CSEA stated that it took immediate steps to contain the incident, enhanced its security measures, engaged external cybersecurity professionals, and began notifying affected individuals in January 2026.

Federman & Sherwood is investigating whether Civil Service Employees Association, Inc. implemented reasonable cybersecurity safeguards, whether the unauthorized access could have been prevented, and whether individuals impacted by the incident may have legal claims.

The compromised information may have included:

  • Full name
  • Social Security number
  • Other sensitive information
