California Cancer Associates for Research and Excellence – San Diego Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (July 21, 2025) – The law firm of Federman & Sherwood announces it is investigating a data breach involving California Cancer Associates for Research and Excellence – San Diego (CCARE), following notification filed with the Attorney General of California.
On June 13, 2025, CCARE discovered that it had been the target of an email phishing attack resulting in unauthorized access to sensitive patient information contained in both email and SharePoint accounts. The breach occurred between December 13, 2024, and December 16, 2024, during which time unauthorized parties gained access to certain files and emails.
While the likely motive behind the breach appears to have been to further a phishing scheme, CCARE’s investigation revealed that certain patient information was accessed, including names and potentially other protected health and personal information. To date, CCARE reports that there is no evidence of misuse of the accessed data.
As part of their response, CCARE has engaged cybersecurity experts, reviewed the impacted data, and is providing affected individuals with access to Epiq Privacy Solutions ID
Eligible individuals are encouraged to enroll by following instructions provided in their individual notification letters. The identity protection coverage is offered for a set period at no cost to recipients.
To help prevent future incidents, CCARE is also enhancing its cybersecurity awareness training for staff and reviewing security protocols across its systems.
Federman & Sherwood is investigating whether CCARE took appropriate steps to safeguard patient data prior to the incident, and whether affected individuals may be entitled to compensation or other legal remedies.

- Social Security numbers
- Medical and health insurance information
- Other sensitive information
