BYU-Pathway Worldwide (Ensign College, BYU-Idaho & BYU-Pathway Worldwide) Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (July 22, 2025) – The law firm of Federman & Sherwood has initiated an investigation into a data breach reported by BYU-Pathway Worldwide, a Utah-based nonprofit educational organization, which was recently filed with the California Attorney General.
According to the breach notification, BYU-Pathway identified unauthorized access to its network via a compromised vendor account on or around June 17, 2025. The organization acted swiftly, revoking the vendor’s access by June 24, 2025, and launched a full investigation with federal law enforcement and external cybersecurity experts.
The breach potentially exposed sensitive personal data belonging to current and former students, including names, Social Security numbers (if provided), student account IDs, contact details, gender, marital status, religious affiliation, age, and academic course history. While BYU-Pathway states there is no evidence that the compromised data has been misused, the nature and scope of the information accessed raises significant concerns.
In response, BYU-Pathway has offered complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services to affected individuals and has reported the breach to appropriate regulatory agencies, including state attorneys general and consumer reporting bureaus.
Federman & Sherwood is investigating whether BYU-Pathway Worldwide took sufficient measures to safeguard the data entrusted to it by students and whether additional legal remedies may be available to those affected.
