Brigham Young University (“BYU”) Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (July 24, 2025) – Federman & Sherwood, a law firm specializing in complex litigation and data privacy matters, has initiated an investigation into a recently disclosed data breach involving Brigham Young University (“BYU”).
According to a notification filed with the Attorney General of Maine, BYU detected unauthorized access to its servers between April 25, 2025, and April 27, 2025. Upon discovery of the incident, BYU secured its IT systems and launched a comprehensive internal investigation. On July 1, 2025, BYU determined that the compromised files contained the names and Social Security numbers of certain individuals.
Notification letters were mailed to the affected individuals on July 23, 2025, and BYU is offering each person one year of complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services through Experian. The university has also implemented enhanced security measures in an effort to prevent future incidents.
Brigham Young University has advised affected individuals to remain vigilant by reviewing their financial statements and credit reports and has established a toll-free call center to address any questions.
Federman & Sherwood is currently working to determine the scope of the breach, whether additional individuals may have been affected, and whether sufficient safeguards were in place to protect sensitive personal data.

- Social Security number
- Other sensitive information
