Begin and Associates Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (July 29, 2025) – The law firm of Federman & Sherwood announces it is investigating a data breach involving Begin and Associates, an accounting firm located in Saco, Maine. The breach, which has been reported to the Office of the Maine Attorney General, exposed sensitive personal information and may have affected both individuals and their 2024 tax filings.
According to the notification sent to affected clients, Begin and Associates discovered on June 25, 2025, that an unauthorized third party accessed the tax software platform the firm uses to prepare and electronically file tax returns. This unauthorized access appears to have resulted in the fraudulent filing of certain 2024 tax returns, including those of affected individuals.
The information potentially accessed includes full names and Social Security numbers, which are commonly used by identity thieves to commit tax fraud and other forms of identity theft.
In response to the breach, Begin and Associates is offering 12 months of complimentary identity theft protection services through IDX, A ZeroFox Company. The services include credit and CyberScan monitoring, identity theft insurance coverage, and full-service identity recovery assistance.
