American Board of Preventive Medicine Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood
October 19, 2026 – Federman & Sherwood is investigating the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) data breach following a notification concerning unauthorized access to the organization’s network.
According to the notice, an unauthorized actor gained access to ABPM’s network environment and accessed or acquired certain electronic files between March 8 and March 10, 2026. Following a forensic investigation and document review, ABPM determined on or about September 24, 2026, that the affected files contained personal information.
The compromised information included individuals’ full names and additional personal information, although the publicly available notice does not identify the specific additional data elements. The notice reports that 30 Rhode Island residents were affected, with additional individuals potentially affected nationwide.
ABPM stated that it secured its network and engaged external cybersecurity professionals to investigate the incident. The organization also reported that it had no knowledge of misuse of the affected information.
As a precaution, ABPM is offering complimentary IDX credit monitoring, CyberScan monitoring, identity theft recovery services, and up to $1 million in identity theft insurance reimbursement coverage. The enrollment deadline is January 6, 2027.
Federman & Sherwood is investigating whether the American Board of Preventive Medicine implemented reasonable cybersecurity safeguards to protect sensitive personal information and whether additional security measures could have prevented or reduced the impact of the data breach.
The potentially compromised information may include:
- Names
- Social Security numbers
- Other sensitive information
