Accounting & Tax Associates, Inc. Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (July 22, 2025) – The law firm of Federman & Sherwood announces it has initiated an investigation into a recently disclosed data breach involving Accounting & Tax Associates, Inc., a Massachusetts-based tax preparation firm. According to a notification filed with the Attorney General of Maine, an unauthorized actor gained access to the company’s account on Intuit Inc.’s Lacerte Tax software platform on or around May 14, 2025.
Following an internal forensic investigation concluded on July 2, 2025, the company confirmed that sensitive personal information may have been compromised, including customer names and other personally identifiable information (PII). The exact scope of exposed data has not yet been publicly detailed.
The breach notification outlines that Accounting & Tax Associates promptly secured the compromised systems, contacted law enforcement, followed IRS protocols through the Return Integrity & Compliance Services (RICS) department, and engaged third-party cybersecurity specialists to assist with containment and remediation. Despite these actions, affected individuals were only recently notified.
As part of its response, the company is offering one month of complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection through LifeLock Ultimate Plus™ by NortonLifeLock. Individuals impacted by the breach are urged to enroll in identity protection services, monitor their financial accounts for unusual activity, and consider placing fraud alerts or security freezes on their credit files.
