University of St. Thomas-Houston Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood

May 26, 2026 – Federman & Sherwood, a national consumer protection law firm, is investigating the University of St. Thomas-Houston data breach, a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to sensitive personal information that was reported to the Attorney General of Maine.

According to the notice, the University of St. Thomas-Houston (“USTH”) became aware of suspicious activity within its computer network on or about August 12, 2025. Following discovery of the incident, USTH secured its systems, notified law enforcement, and engaged third-party specialists to investigate the matter.

The investigation determined that an unauthorized actor accessed certain systems within the university’s network environment between July 25, 2025, and August 12, 2025, and that files may have been accessed and/or acquired during that period. USTH later completed a detailed review of the affected files to identify impacted individuals.

The information potentially exposed includes names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and security questions and answers.

Cybersecurity incidents affecting educational institutions are particularly concerning because they may expose sensitive student, employee, and administrative information that can be used for identity theft and fraud.

Federman & Sherwood is actively investigating whether the University of St. Thomas-Houston implemented reasonable cybersecurity safeguards and whether this data security incident could have been prevented. The firm is also evaluating potential legal claims on behalf of individuals affected by the University of St. Thomas-Houston data breach.

USTH reported that it implemented additional security measures, notified federal law enforcement, enhanced employee training, and is offering affected individuals twelve (12) months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services through Experian IdentityWorks.

Consumers who received a notice regarding the University of St. Thomas-Houston data breach or who believe their personal information may have been compromised are encouraged to closely monitor financial accounts, online accounts, and credit reports for suspicious activity.
