University of Miami Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (August 18, 2025) – The law firm of Federman & Sherwood announces it is investigating a data breach reported by the University of Miami to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
According to the University, an internal investigation in June 2025 revealed that an employee had accessed over 2,000 patient records between September 2022 and May 2025 without a legitimate business or clinical purpose. The University has since determined that approximately 2,928 individuals were affected.
Importantly, the University stated that no financial information, including Social Security numbers or credit data, was involved in this incident.
The employee responsible was terminated, and the University is working with law enforcement to pursue any necessary actions. Additionally, the University engaged Kroll, Inc. to notify affected patients by postal mail. For those who believe they may have been impacted but did not receive a letter, the University has set up a dedicated line at 1-800-573-9188.
The University has also stated it is collaborating with cybersecurity experts to strengthen security measures and update procedures to better safeguard health information.
