Ellis Medicine Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (July 23, 2025) – The law firm of Federman & Sherwood announces that it is investigating a data breach involving Ellis Medicine, a healthcare provider based in Schenectady, New York, which has been reported to the Maine Attorney General’s office.
On or around May 14, 2025, Ellis Medicine concluded an internal investigation into unauthorized access to an employee email account that occurred during two distinct time periods: from January 17 through January 24, 2025, and again from March 27 through April 5, 2025. The unauthorized party may have accessed sensitive personal information during these incidents.
While Ellis Medicine has stated that there is no current evidence of misuse of the information involved, the compromised data potentially includes individuals’ first and last names in combination with other confidential information, which was not specified in the general notice but may include elements commonly targeted in identity theft.
Upon discovering the suspicious activity, Ellis Medicine immediately initiated containment efforts, including password resets, multi-factor authentication updates, and engaged third-party cybersecurity specialists to investigate the scope and impact. Following the investigation, Ellis Medicine began notifying affected individuals and is offering 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring and fraud support services through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company.
Federman & Sherwood is actively investigating the scope of this breach, the adequacy of Ellis Medicine’s data security measures, and whether sufficient safeguards were in place to protect patient data in compliance with applicable privacy laws, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
