Oxford Life Insurance Company (“Oxford”) Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (May 14, 2025) – The law firm of Federman & Sherwood has initiated an investigation into a data breach involving Oxford Life Insurance Company (“Oxford”).

On February 20, 2025, Oxford was alerted to suspicious activity on its IT network. The company promptly initiated its incident response protocols and engaged third-party forensic specialists to assist with the investigation. According to Oxford, the breach stemmed from a social engineering attack in which a threat actor impersonated a collections company to gain access to an employee’s computer. This allowed unauthorized access to Oxford’s network for approximately one hour, during which time certain files were copied.

Oxford later determined that the accessed files contained sensitive personal information of individuals associated with the company, including policyholders, claimants, and agents. Affected data included names and Social Security numbers, and in at least one case, a driver’s license or state identification number. The company completed its review of the compromised files on April 18, 2025, and began mailing notification letters to impacted Maine residents on May 13, 2025.

Oxford is offering affected individuals one year of complimentary credit monitoring and identity restoration services through Experian. The company has also stated that it is implementing additional cybersecurity measures and employee training to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Federman & Sherwood is examining whether Oxford had adequate data security measures in place and whether the company took appropriate steps to protect personal information under applicable state and federal law.

The type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Other sensitive information
