Blue Shield of California (“BSC”) Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (June 16, 2025) – The law firm of Federman & Sherwood announces it is investigating a data breach involving Blue Shield of California (“BSC”). On June 6, 2025, Blue Shield began notifying individuals of a privacy incident that potentially impacted members’ protected health information (PHI).
According to Blue Shield, on April 4, 2025, its Digital Health Record team discovered that a data merge error within the Member Health Record feature of its online member portal had resulted in some users being able to view other members’ health information. The issue, which reportedly began with the portal’s launch on June 27, 2024, allowed access to sensitive health data including visit details, medications, immunization records, allergies, lab results, and health conditions — though Blue Shield states that no personally identifiable information such as names, dates of birth, or Social Security numbers were viewable.
Upon discovery, Blue Shield immediately disabled the Member Health Record feature and initiated an internal investigation. Though there is no current evidence that the data was misused, the incident exposed a significant number of individuals to potential privacy risks. Blue Shield is offering affected individuals one year of complimentary identity protection services through Experian IdentityWorks.
Federman & Sherwood is actively investigating the scope and impact of the breach, as well as the adequacy of Blue Shield’s response and security measures.
