Optima Tax Relief, LLC (“Optima”) Data Breach – Investigated by Federman & Sherwood
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (August 19, 2025) – The law firm of Federman & Sherwood announces that it is investigating a data breach involving Optima Tax Relief, LLC (“Optima”), a tax services company based in Santa Ana, California.
According to a notice filed with the Maine Attorney General, Optima identified unusual activity within its computer network on May 1, 2025. The company immediately took steps to secure its systems and launched an investigation with the assistance of forensic experts. The investigation determined that an unauthorized party accessed Optima’s network between May 1, 2025, and May 6, 2025, and downloaded copies of certain files.
On July 9, 2025, Optima confirmed that files containing the names, Social Security numbers, and/or financial account numbers of at least five Maine residents had been compromised. Notification letters were mailed to affected individuals on August 15, 2025. Optima has offered complimentary identity monitoring and identity theft protection services to impacted residents through Kroll, a global leader in cybersecurity and risk mitigation.
In addition, Optima has established a dedicated toll-free call center for questions related to the incident and has reported that it is reviewing its safeguards and strengthening system security to reduce the likelihood of a similar event in the future.
